I remember years ago no one would fish for Tog in the summer because that's when they spawn. And that most Captains wouldn't start for them until around Oct 1st.But with the "decline" of trout in the bay, outrageous flounder limits, hardly any bluefish, and the croakers showing up later each year seems like tog are going to be taking up the slack, and taking a butt whooping too.I think the state should keep the 3 fish limit until Oct 1st or we will not have any tog left either.JMO...Ed |

It is good that folks are concerned about Tog management. Saltfish has provided resources concerning this topic online and @ Lurefest for the last 3 years. If you missed Jeff Tinsman's Lecture @ LF and have not been able to attend TFFAC meetings where this is discussed frequently then I suggest that you visit the board's topic area concerning Artificial Reefs. Go here: http://www.saltfish.net/discus/messages/59426/88649.html?1273082716 We have provided several different ways to read Jeff's excellent slides but it is just not the same in talking with him in person. Ed, Your thoughts are good and are conservation oriented. IMO this what SF is about and discussion here plus what the fisheries biologists and regulators say or write gives us all the info to make "informed" judgements. Thanks, Jay Jay Little, Board Administrator admin@saltfish.net

The numbers of big tog in Delaware and surrounding waters are way, way down and the large majority of what's left are small. This isn't opinion, it's it's the result of the scientific studies we saw in Jeff's latest presentation. I for one haven't fished tog nearly as much in the last few years as I used to, mainly because to me it's depressing sometimes thinking about how it was versus how it is now, and how bad it can get soon. Once in awhile I'll still do it though. It's a wierd feeling togging in shorts and a tee shirt though in my opinion... Just doesn't fit-in to the tradition... Steve P.

Also on a much more positive note- Jeff's presentation showed the growth rate to be much better than what was previously thought. Recent studies versus very old studies have shown that. Also tog spawn several times a year, not just spring or summer. This of course means we can do something and it will actually have an impact in our lifetime. Stop the 10 fish creel- it draws excessive pressure from out of state travelling toggers who bypass Jersey and Maryland to get here with dreams of big stringers on their mind. The frustration is that so few actually are successful in big stringers now that reducing the 10 fish limit does virtually nothing to satisfy mandated harvest reductions, yet the intangible is that we lose so many 3-4 fish catches through trips made here by folks that would otherwise stay closer to home. Just my thoughts. Steve P.
