just wanted to ask some members about the canal. i knew it was dregged at the begining of the year but didnt know if the whole thing was accessable and passable by boat or if anybody tried it out. the boat ramp i use is at the southend of the canal in bethany and i would like to run it north into the indian river bay. i just have a small 14ft runabout so i dont draft too much. any info would be awesome thank you |

It's close to being finished and the park ran our pontoon boat thru the canal a week ago, so it may be passable for a 14 footer by now. |

We've talked about this in the General Boating forum. It is pretty close to being done. See http://www.dnrec.delaware.gov/Assawoman/Pages/ACDPUpdates.aspx I would be surprised if you had much trouble with a 14 foot boat. Just go easy and let us know what conditions you find. |

YOU WILL BE FINE IN YOUR BOAT. THE DREDGE IS A 1/2 MILE SOUTH OF THE RT 26 BRIDGE. I HAD A 21 FOOTER WITH A 150 HP PASS MY DOCK LAST SAT. HE SAID HE HAD TO TILT THE MOTOR FOR ABOUT 200 YARDS FROM RT 26 BRIDGE SOUTH. |

You will be fine with that boat, I was through with my 18 1/2 center console during the 4th weekend, my brother and I cleared a few trees out from the middle of the canal at its most shallow point. It was pretty easy going. Palm Beach 18 1/2 Center Console Merc 115

I say we all get together and try it! The biggest boat goes first to clear the snags!! |

The big question - Is the channel accurately marked from the canal to OC? Stingray

You should be good with the 14'. Watch the Central Ave. bridge. From what I remember, they were having problems getting the permits to dredge under it because of the footings on the pier. I believe it was like 3' avg. under the bridge last September. |

I was there today on low tide. Depth finder read anywhere from 1.7 to 3.2. Lots of debris in the water. Not the greatest conditions and jet skis were using it as a drag strip |

That doesn't sound very promising. I believe the original plan was to dredge it to a depth of 4 feet at mean low tide. Doesn't sound like they succeeded. Where was it shallowest? Where were the conditions the worst? Where was the deepest reading and where do you experience the better conditions? What was the depth most of the time? Closer to 3.2 or closer to 1.7? |

i dumped in at the kent ave. boat ramp which is in south bethany. the further north i went the shallower it got. the worst of it was like the first 1/2 mile . the depth was about 2.5 for the most of it. i mite be heading out again on satuday on a higher tide. just keep a eye out when you guys run through |

The latest report that I have is that the dredge is 1200 feet from completion and they need a new permit since the old one expired and it won't be done until early next year. The next question is about the clearance at high tide under the bridges and I don't have the answer to that one. I went about halfway down the Assawoman Canal starting at White Creek at high tide on Sunday. It is not ready for prime time yet. I have a 21 foot boat that takes up about 1 foot of draft and with my outboard trimmed all the way up, the engine doesn't take much more. The northern end was more or less fine. I was surprised at the number of stumps and overhanging branches left, but there was sufficient deep water in the center, consistently about 3.5 to 4 feet. However, beginning as you approach the Salt Pond turnoff from the north, I began getting readings under 2 feet. And under the Route 26 bridge is ridiculous. Although I had the motor trimmed all the way up, the boat scraped bottom and I watched a pontoon do the same thing. Since I understood there was more shallow water coming, I turned around when I was a little bit south of the Route 26 bridge. It is a very pleasant ride as no wake zones go -- just about all wooded. It was very quiet and peaceful. I passed several boats going the other way. Everybody was observring the no wake zones and all were courteous in waiting so that the boats could pass in areas where it was wide enough. But it just is not consistently deep enough to make the trip without worrying about scraping bottom and dinging up your prop. Hopefully they will be able to fix it next year. |
