How do you, SAFELY, release a 6ft. shark in the surf??? I and my grandsons are plaining a over-nighter next weekend. I have the equipment and some knowledge on how to catch them but do not know how to ,safely, release them. Will some of you guys help me out???? Thanks Bob |

Get him back in the water ASAP! Face first is preferred...so he goes about his merry way to deeper water. Common sense....get him back ASAP and think how he would like to be released....if you were him...so to speak! Always watch the tail!!! They can get down right nasty with that tail! "If it ain't broke....take it apart and put it back together and have lots of left over parts".

I have recently started some shark fishing from the beach myself using boat tackle and kayak and recently caught a 6 foot Sand Tiger and a couple of others. I am alone or with my 12 year old son so I have to handle the shark while my son handles the tackle. I use a heavy duty gaff I made to hook it in the bottom jaw to bring it on the beach. Then to release it I do just as More ice said, I try to push it in the surf head first. It usually takes a couple of waves before they regain enough consciousness to take off back to the deep. have a good time!

So...why can't we just sacrifice a hook and a few inches of leader and not bring them ashore? No objection to catching whatsoever..just asking? Wouldn't it be awesome to be able to release a monster buck or bear if it were possible? |

That is what I say Don. Keep them in the wash, it is easier to release them and is not so hard on the shark. You will not get the pics of the mouth wide open but I am not sure why all sharkers must do that pic while straddling the shark. I only go with help if I am going to beach the shark, otherwise it gets the hook and I get my fingers and toes. Rick |

Bob, they do that for Elk out west. They only give so many permits so the hunters use a vidio camera and a paintball to shoot the elk when they do not get a permit. They have a funny name for the acivity. Rick |

Some tarpon are released along side the boat in the water... but some are just a life time catch and are pulled out of the water for a few pics then released. They may not be straddled but what's the real difference. It sounds like the shark was a life time catch and swam away in the end.
BTW....not my picture.... |

Personally I don`t agree with gaffing fish unless you know for sure they are to be harvested.I see it at the IR rocks and it just doesn`t fit the category of a proper catch and release IMO.And when people "boomarang" them back to the water its hard to be quiet. Just the way I see it. BB Fishing is a matter of opinion

Gofish is that an older picture? In Florida waters its illegal to pull Tarpon out of the water any more. I would just cut the leader and be done, unless its a 4 foot black tip than thats going home for the grill...LOL!!
