Trying to get a jump on the fall striper season - anyone build their own or purchase a "cage" to keep live spot at the boat? Also, any other advice on catching and keeping live spot would be most appreciated. Thanks www.ucHelpCenter.com Dogfish - the other white meat

Esquired, I've had success catching spot on a sabiki rig or a small top/bottom rig with fishbites from the canal. Do the best on an incoming tide. I've heard if you're going to keep live spot to use a round cage preferably plastic so they don't injure themselves swimming around. |

I picked up a wire (round corners)cage in the keys used to keep pinfish works great. I have heard they can be picked up at Mumfords in Selbyville. A 30 gallon plastic barrel also works. Bill

Sabiki/Fishbites thing works well if you don't mind picking them off 1 or 2 at a time. If you can get your hands on some tuna scraps and a spot trap, that works better than anything, IMO. Some guys will throw bait in a canal-canned dog food, etc., then wait a while and throw a cast net, hoping to nail a bunch at a time. I think the round-cage thing is accurate, too...I've used non-round cages and the fish rub raw spots on their heads and noses from running into the corners. For trap bait, I'll use whatever is in the refrigerator that's ready to get tossed out and still catch 'em...like tonights offering was a leftover stuffed zucchini that lured in 3 or 4 before it was all gone. Likewise on keeping the ones I've caught fed...I'll toss just about anything in the cage, and if the spot don't eat it, they'll eat what comes in to eat it. Finally, I found out the hard way about transporting them out to the fishing grounds...their water needs to be constantly aerated or they will die quickly. I bought an aerator (the ones you see at WalMart with suction cups on the bottom)and rigged it up with wires and alligator clips that I hook straight to my battery when I'm carrying spot on the boat...I had to do this because my bait well has a poorly designed aeration feature. |

I purchased a 5 gallon water cooler from Walmart, drilled a hole in the top and used your basic fish aerator found at any bait and tackle shop. I just feed the tube down the hole and into the cooler. I have kept 6-8 spot in the cooler and they lasted all day. I usually cast net for them in the AM or the night before. |

Dave a guy I fish with down at the beach takes small trashcans, drills a bunch of holes, and takes foam (those "noodle" foam float things for pools work great), and adheres it to the top, allowing it to float. He also bought some chicken wire, similar to a crab trap, and puts foam on the stop as well. It's pretty neat, he has kept fish alive for months, well into fall/early winter. As far as catching spot, size 12 hooks, and a piece of nightcrawler have always been the ticket for me, as well as fishbites. Cast net in back bays work well too time to time. |

The blood line from tuna is great bait (Check with Joe at Lewes Harbor) & a plastic drum drilled full of half inch holes will keep them. A big cooler with the salt water wash down hose running constantly works for taking them fishing. Transporting them by car is a little more difficult. The real problem is thieves. If you don't keep your cage well hidden someone else will be using your bait this fall. Private dock or marina, doesn't seem to matter. The low life types know what that tell tale line running down into the water is for. |

Yup. I've had spot stolen every year for the last 5 years. You would think they would be safe some places but they aren't anywhere. You advertising on here that there will be spot at a slip in the canal will guarantee that they will be stolen. Honestly I would forget it after this post. |

Make sure your secret spot has enough water movement. Spot need some current. They will die at the ends of the creeks around here as well as dead end canals. Also with the dry year the salt line is deceiving and one good heavy rain will move the brackish/fresh water back to normal locations. |

Spot can survive in fresh water, if you have a well and don't treat the water. Not sure how often the water would have to be replaced. Needless to say you have to add air. |

The little bait store at potnets seaside beside the tiki bar sells wire spot traps 35 dollars a piece. The gentleman that makes them told me the best place to sit them is around piers docks etc. They also sell bricks of bait for the traps its ground up tuna and bluefish. He also sells live spot for 2 dollars a piece!! I'm in the wrong business!!! |

Wow! Right now you can catch just about all of 'em you want for less than a dollars worth of FishBites (bloodworm flavor seems to work best) just outside of Seaside. #8 or #10 hooks seem to improve the hookup ratio although they can also be caught on the #4 or #6 hooks used for the relatively small croakers in IRB.
