Kyle and I went to the auction today with about 20 other people. Butch Emmert started the Auction stating the last sale price 6 years ago was $485,000. Emmert was asking for $500K to start and nothing happened. Finally a local guy bid $100k. Another bid was made for $150k and that is where it stopped. The Sale was contingent on Tom's approval and the auctioneer said he was pretty sure that the final Bid would be rejected. We didn't hang around to find out but I reckon we will be buying Bait from Tom for another year. Whew this economy is rough.... Jay Little, Board Administrator admin@saltfish.net

No disrespect but if the sale price from 6 yrs ago didn't sell, why would they start higher in this economy? |

First of all you don't know me well enough to call me a moron..And second, if he was offered 485 thou. i think he would've sold 6 yrs ago. From what i read that was the selling price not what he was offered. |

I am with throwback on this one... Its not that properties prices are high now, its just a few years ago they were outrageous and now they are close to being normal.... come on now.. The only ones that disagree are the ones that bought during the wrong time!!! and don't get me wrong, I do feel sorry for them. |

Whoa fellas!! No need for name calling as my words were misunderstood. Let me rephrase.... "The last sale price from six years ago..." $485,000 was the price that the property was sold for from the previous owner to the current owner who has now put the land up on the auction block. The auctioneer was just giving the last "documented" value of the property or the cost of ownership of the parcel in 2004. I guess what was clear in my head just didn't come across as I wrote. I'll try to be more diligent. Jay Jay Little, Board Administrator admin@saltfish.net

Since he bought the business, Tom and his wife have built it up. He added a website, sells crabs, trailer / boat repair and fish cleaning. He has also promoted the area, especially for Black drum season, his flounder tournament and shark fishing in the bay. I believe the business has greater earning potential now. I looked at the business at that time, since I had been recently downsized, but decided against it based on how many trailers were in the ramp parking lot on the weekends. There seem to be a lot more now. George, the previous owner, had been there during the weakfish boom years but things gradually tapered off in the 1990's. On the positive side, Tog and Stripers have extended his season to the end of Nov where things used to be pretty well shut down by the end of Sept. Best wishes to Tom and a job well done! |

Tom and his wife are doing a swell job with their bait shop. Let all of us continue to support their efforts. Theirs is a friendly place to shop and conveniently located. If the fish get more plentiful more people will be launching their boats there. |

Maybe in another 5 to 6 years, or my guess for when the Sea Trout population will once again support a viable fishery. It took that long for the Stripers to come back. Sooooooo maybe? And as long as there are no more oil/chemical/environmental disasters. JMHO. |
