Thread: Delaware Sharks

    Delaware Sharks

    Joe,
I was on Old Inlet's website today and saw that their shore-based shark tournament got cancelled this summer because DNREC denied them the permit for it, stating "...pressure on the coastal shark population as its primary reason." Is this a hint for things to come in the near future for sharkin off the beach in Delaware for the general public? I mean, can it be made unlawful to fish for sharks from the beach? Is this just an effort to try to cut down publicity of the availability of sharks from the beach, or are serious considerations towards conservation the main factor in this? I'm just curious, because I've really come to enjoy catchin 'em from the beach these past few years. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

By the way, sorry this is more of a fishing question as opposed to hunting, but, I didn't know who else to ask. If you can't answer this, I understand.

I will give Joe time to respond but this really belongs in the Fishing forum. There has already been considerable discussion already on this topic. Go here to see the Notice about the Public Hearing held on March 25th. The rationale for this regulation is found in the second half of the notice. At this point official public comment has passed.

Thanks, Jay. I know this isn't really a "hunting" topic, and I apologize... But I wanted to hear what someone with actual ties to DNREC had to say about it, ya know? Sorry if it's an inconvenience, Joe =(

Ok, call me a rube but I guess I'm way out of touch on the issue. Do you actually need a permit from DNREC to conduct a tournament that is essentially nothing more than a recordkeeping exercise regarding angling results over a designated period of time?

    Frank-
Apparently. I didn't know either. It's news to me, and that's why I wanted to see what Joe had to say about it.

    Re: Delaware Sharks

This forum page is for asking Joe questions about hunting topics. Joe does not work in fisheries and it would be better to direct questions regarding fishing to them. Please take your discussion about fishing topics to the Fishing Forum. I'll be having this thread moved to the fiishing forum. Thanks

You need a permit to conduct a tournament on the beach at a Delaware state park. You also need a permit to hold any large gathering there. I don't know what constitutes a large gathering, but the DMS picnic in the summer needed a permit.

Most states require permits for organized tournaments of any kind, including catch and release. There is controversy in PA over regs changes for tournaments on the Susquehanna this year.
