    Charcoal grill

Looking for a small to medium size charcoal grill. Some grills like the Lodge Logic are well built but does not have a cover as the permanent grills you see at camp sites. What is the advantage of one with a cover ovs open and appreciate any recommendations or features I should be looking for. Sam's had a barrel one last year that was divided in half that I liked but it is not available this year.

HW, I was looking at them at Wal mart and they seem to be the best I like so far.

We bought a Weber years ago and still use it regulary. They have a good selection of charcoal grills with many different options depending on what your looking for.Webers cost more than most but for good reasons. They come with stainless steel cooking grates, porcelin enameled bowls and lots of other standard features.Ours has the tuck away lid, hinged cooking grates, one touch cleaning system and ash catcher which are all very nice when you grill a lot.Doubt most people keep anything as long as I do but they carry replacement parts grates, handles, wheels which can come in handy if you keep it a while.

Those Green Eggs are realy nice Smoker/Grlils and you use natural lump charcoal-have mine to 600 degrees in 12 minutes for grilling and no aftertaste. For smoking you can hold it at 260 degrees and the smoke ring is great in the beef or pork. You can check out mine if you like. I believe Beylers inDover sells them. They are heavy Kamodo style ceramic smoker/grills. It is definitely a difereny style of cooking on one of these. They are a little pricey but you get what you pay for as usual. Good grillin. Bob

rowboater, the Weber looks well made and have a reputable name. The main problem is I like a warming rack to put items nearly cooked so they do not get overdone and they do not seem to have that feature.

BigBob, Every one that has a green egg raves over them. Do not know if they are trying to impress me or not. Wish I would have bought a full grill well made at Bills Flea Day but did not want to mess with it carring it home. I may look at the egg at Bylers and consider it. and see what price they can give me. i usually have sticker shock just looking at the accesories.

If you do a google search or search Weber's website there are multiple warming racks available. Here's one for a charcoal grill.

not sure what brand or how much but last week when I was grill shopping (bought a gas grill) but was checking out others, The was one charcoal grill that was similar to the one you showed but you could raise and lower the shelf with the charcoal on it, this might be standard on all charcoal grills, I don't know but thought it was cool

Weber quality is very good and they cost a bit more than most but less than some. After a series of lower quality units, my 15 year old Weber gas grill still performs great and hasn't cost squat to maintain. It's been outdoors and covered when not in use the whole time. Had a little Weber Smokey Joe kettle for camping and it's awesome so my daughter bought me a big arse Weber kettle last fathers day. Absolutely love it. The lump charcoal is great stuff.

Weber is rated #1 at this site. http://bbq.about.com/od/charcoalgril...atp062604a.htm

IMO, you can't go wrong with a Weber. I had a Weber charcoal grill years ago that held up very well and did a great job at grilling. I finally switched to gas because of the convenience and went through a few of the lower priced models (which IMO are throwaways) before finally investing in a Broilmaster, which is a very high quality, heavy duty grill that'll last for many, many years. Last summer, my wife decided she wanted something a little bigger and fancier with more features, so I now own a Weber Summit S-670, which is a great grill with just about every feature imaginable. Hopefully, for what that damn thing cost, it'll outlast me!
BTW, the advantage of a cover is that the smoke from the burning fat drippings adds flavor to the meat.

    Re: Charcoal grill

if you ger a charcoal grill.......invest in some firebrick.......get the thin ones............your grill will last lots.....lots longer......plus the firebrick will absorb the fat drippings....which provides more flavor......[like lava rocks do.......gas grills without lava rocks dont give the same smoky flavor]

plus you can use less charcoal

    Re: Charcoal grill

A cheap alternative to buying a new charcoal grill, is to find an old gas grill that someone no longer uses or is throwing out, rip out the gas burner guts and throw in a rack and some charcoal and your're good to go. That's all I use.

A few years ago I picked up two of these for ten bucks. They worked great & lasted several years before rotting out. Would've been longer but we left them outside year round. Sometimes we used charcoal, other times small pieces of hickory or fruitwood for a smokey flavor. And they even had a warming rack. The only problem was they are so light that if you left the top open the wind could blow it over, although you could screw the feet down to a table or something.

    Re: Charcoal grill

Went grill looking/shopping on Friday. Week before I looked seriously at the Wal Marts selection so with that and all your suggestions had a good reference basis. Went to TSC, K Mart, Lowes, Sam's, Ace Hardware and HomeDepot. Final selection was back to WalMart and got the Kingsford 381 sq in Charcoal Wagon Grill. Best instructions I have ever followed and the quality of design & manufacture is exceptional. Not a Weber but was exactly what I was hoping for. The Weber units did not have a hinged cover which would be awkward for me, no warming rack without buying an accesory and njot used to a round cooking surface excluding frying pans. Have not tried it yet but got it in the nick of time. My old tabletop developed a fist size hole in the bottom when I used it Saturday. Where's the beef?
